And on the flipside, this has been the most pleasantly cool winter we've had down under in a few years! It's still topping out in the mid 20's here, and it's been rainy and humid for the last few weeks, but anything's a relief after our summers. I've got my side-gig up and running now, making...

I'm annoyed that the NeoGeo releases on the Switch are so bare-bones, again. While the emulation on Nintendo consoles tends to be pretty spot-on, the consistent lack of online play is grating when it's so easily achievable elsewhere (even if the PSN version is a bit crap in that regard). So...

Oh, something which is going forward atm is this: I've put the guts of a Samsung Gear VR controller inside a nerf pistol, and the result is surprisingly close to being a modern day GunCon! It feels very, very similar. Trigger shoots, black button is back button, pulling back the slide is...

Heyooo, i'm back! ARMS was good, although not being able to combine the control schemes bummed me out a bit. I was planning on building a virtua-on joystick setup out of a pair of joycons, but needed to be able to fire punches with a button instead of a thrust. Since no button throws a punch in...

From my post on that reddit thread: If your switch isn't already curved it isn't going to, and if it is curved it's not going to get worse. By all means replace your device if you're unhappy with the manufacturing quality, but the problem isn't related to heat, it's due to cheaping out on the...

New patch just dropped, taking the release version to 1.1.1! Despite the usual dearth of patch notes, this one makes very obvious improvements to the framerate, and while it doesn't totally fix Korok forest it is WAAAAY better. Huge, obvious improvements, making a fantastic game that bit better.

In patch news, Snake Pass just copped an update which tones down the severity of the rumble, adds DoF effects to the cutscenes, and improves the lighting/shadows. There may also be some changes to the rendering quality and/or resolution, but i haven't had time to check it out: It definitely...

Lego City is on the wii u eshop at around the same size as the ps4/xbone versions, the Switch version is the very odd outlier. To be fair to that file size, the game contains A LOT of pre-rendered cutscenes, and has a huge amount of voice work in it. It has far more space-hoggy assets than your...

Snake Pass runs the PS4/PC assets, and really only needed a couple of options unticked to run on the switch. That's a goddamned miracle in comparison to the work which went into something like the Wii COD ports! It runs at quite a low res in handheld mode, but the small size of the screen, the...

Incidentally, Snake Pass is out today, and it's damned charming! It's a very simple collectathon, but controlling (and losing control of) the snake is plenty of fun. There's a bit of depth to the control, and it actually encourages backseat snaking from anyone watching on (oh how they mock my...

The media is great at creating news on a slow day since gaming journalism is hardly held to any kind of ethical standard, but this case brought up a legitimate concern in the face of multiple recent $10 price hikes for switch versions of other games. What if a major publisher DID just decide to...

If you mess with the face buttons and twirl the sticks in the waiting screen, it modifies the background music! I was just screwing around when i noticed that. :p Nintendo.

I just don't believe the problem is solved by a piece of foam, since it has no bearing on the efficacy of the antenna loop. The antenna is shielded from the foam by the matrix of the pcb, there's no contact between the parts to allow for conduction. If anything, the foam is only there to...

I really dig snipperclips, it's one of my favourite puzzle games of the last several years, but the obvious caveat is that it is a multiplayer game. Even though you technically CAN play it by yourself, that's not the point. The switch does lend itself to more multiplayer possibilities than the...

So i managed to find a pretty good colour match for spice orange. I had a small hiccup with the final coat of polyurethane clear, i put it on too soon after the first layer and ended up with a textured finish instead (the urethane contracts as it cures). The problem is colloquially known as...

Nintendo could've made the pcb case in the dock removable with a touch more work, giving you the usb 3, usb-c, and hdmi outs. That would've been a neat touch!

It's not exactly cost-effective since i'd have to start with a dock, but i could totally turn one into something a little bigger than a chromecast! The guts of the thing are just a usb-hdmi converter, but the usb device simply has something like a unique ID to break compatibility with third...

Quick thoughts: 1) The splash sound when link dives into water is the best one i've ever heard in a game. They built on Splatoon, which was the former king of wet sounds. 2) The environmental audio in general is amazing. The rush of wind, the "woo-hoo" owls/pigeons, the distant grunts of...
