“No. 1 Trainer,” a so-called “Super Secret Battle” Pokémon card, sold for $90,000 at auction on July 9. The 1999 card is one of seven copies ever made, being gifts awarded to the winners of seven different regional tournaments, and this particular card’s value was even higher thanks to its being preserved in mint condition (“Gem Mint 10”). The idea behind the cards was that the owners could use them in order to gain preferential access to a secret game tournament, which is how the “Super Secret Battle” naming relates.
