Tretton departs following an apparent "mutual agreement between Mr. Tretton and SCEA", according to the official announcement. He will be replaced by the current exec VP and COO of Sony Network Entertainment International.

Here's the full official announcement:

Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. today announced that Jack Tretton will step down from his role as President and CEO of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) as of March 31, 2014. This is a result of a mutual agreement between Mr. Tretton and SCEA not to renew their contractual relationship.

Shawn Layden, currently Executive Vice President and COO of Sony Network Entertainment International, will become President and CEO of SCEA, effective April 1, 2014.

Mr. Tretton has been with SCEA since its inception in 1995. As one of the founding members of the executive team, Tretton played a pivotal role in launching all PlayStation platforms in North America, including the original PlayStation, PlayStation2, PSP (PlayStationPortable), PlayStation3, PlayStation Network, and PlayStationVita. Most recently, Tretton led the record-breaking launch of PlayStation4 (PS4), which sold more than one million units in 24 hours in North America and is now the #1 next generation gaming console in North America and worldwide. During his tenure, Tretton was also responsible for achieving several industry milestones, including surpassing 50 million units sold of PlayStation2 in North America, and aggressively growing the PlayStation business in Canada and Latin America.

"Working at SCEA for the past 19 years has been the most rewarding experience of my career," said Tretton. "Although I will deeply miss the talented team at SCEA and the passion demonstrated every day by our fans, I'm very excited about starting the next chapter of my career. I want to thank the employees, partners and customers for their tireless commitment to the PlayStation brand and, of course, to our fans who have pushed us to new heights of innovation and entertainment over the past two decades. I leave PlayStation in a position of considerable strength and the future will only get brighter for PlayStation Nation."

A 15-year PlayStation veteran, Layden was one of the founding members of SNEI in 2010, joining the company directly from Sony Computer Entertainment, where he most recently held the position of President, Sony Computer Entertainment Japan. His career at Sony Computer Entertainment also included eight years at SCE Worldwide Studios in London where he directed international software development.

"It's an honor and privilege to join Sony Computer Entertainment America and be a part of the team that is leading the next generation of gaming and entertainment," said Layden. "SCEA is committed to delivering breakthrough gaming experiences that inspire fans and exceed their wildest expectations. As PS4 shows us every day, there has never been a better time to be part of the PlayStation community and I look forward to working with our retail, development, publishing and network partners to further demonstrate why PlayStation is the best place to play."

"I've worked with Jack for nearly two decades and I want to personally thank him for his leadership and the considerable contributions he's made to the SCEA business and PlayStation brand over the years. I wish him nothing but the best in his future endeavors," said Andrew House, President and Group CEO, Sony Computer Entertainment. "I also want to welcome Shawn to the Sony Computer Entertainment America team. I have the utmost confidence in Shawn's leadership capabilities, and his deep knowledge of the gaming industry and commitment to gamers, will help keep PlayStation at the forefront of entertainment and innovative gameplay."

That's too bad, as he was good with his public appearances during conferences. Hopefully the new guy, Shawn Layden, is up to the job.

I always thought he looked scared. Maybe I just remember him mostly from the post Sony credit card fiasco E3. He was like, "please forgive us, I'll suck your dick I swear, we'll fix it".

Jack Tretton is a humble dude. He's not like Reggie where he's just looking to spout memes. But he knows how to get people excited like fucking crazy. He did Sony's DRM speech. Plus I feel like I can connect with him more. I forget that he's the CEO of SCEA sometimes because he's so down to earth. Reggie is not that.
He's been there since Playstation's inception. He had to leave eventually, so why not end on a high note?

He doesn't look scared; he looks modest and understanding. They had to address the PSN hacks, and he was the perfect person to do it. Boohoo, he doesn't try to be cool like Reggie does by constantly referencing himself. He was the best E3 presenter by far.

Humble? Seriously yo? Lmao no.
You really need to brush up on your playstation history

And Reggie's Meme thing just happened.
Now people bother the dude about it. So he says them again.

Like lol do people only remember the last two or three years?

Nah not even that. Tretton was shit talking the 3DS back then

Anyway, every time I saw him on stage he seemed robotic. Not very genuine.

Reggie repeats his lines all the time, lol its funny to notice.

Tis my goal to inform people to the path they must take to tread upon on the road to rightness.

Fulldisclosure I just find it funny how forgetful people are.

Good thing I dont hold grudges, I'd probably haunt some poor souls over that shit

Wow, Jack! You troll as much as I do!

An article on CNN Money has PlayStation boss Jack Tretton talking smack about Nintendo's game offerings. He says that the Wii hasn't aged well, and that he doesn't really see it as competition.

"They're starting to run out of steam now in terms of continuing to be relevant in 2011 and beyond," Tretton says. "I mean, you've gotta be kidding me. Why would I buy a gaming system without a hard drive in it? How does this thing scale? Motion gaming is cute, but if I can only wave my arms six inches, how does this really feel like I'm doing true accurate motion gaming?"

And he doesn't go lightly on the DS line: "Our view of the 'Game Boy experience' is that it's a great babysitting tool, something young kids do on airplanes, but no self-respecting twenty-something is going to be sitting on an airplane with one of those," he says. "He's too old for that."

Every twenty-something I know has a DS product, let alone the thirty-somethings. Jack, I like that you're not afraid to talk some sh*t, and I love my PSP and am excited for the NGP, but you can't mess with how successful the DS line is. If the DS is a "babysitting tool," then I'm hot for babysitter, man. These are great game systems.

The rest of the Fortune article has Jack going on about how great 3D is. In their products. He doesn't say anything about the glasses-free 3D in the 3DS.
Yep

Right, he's a certified angel that dropped out of heaven. Bwahaha. We should kneel before him.

I'll miss his approval of all those shameful anti-Nintendo marketing tactics.
Yet all of you guys probably found the Sega bashing from Nintendo back in the day hilarious?
Sony is the closest thing to early 90's Nintendo that we have today. Get over it. Tretton was a boss.

This is some vesti-level trap. I don't think anyone here really respects Reggie. I don't think anyone knows that he's done anything important to be respected for it, besides pretending that he's funny. Jack Tretton is a similar case. It's puppet theater with these guys, and at least everyone I admire here doesn't think otherwise. If we were talking about people whose leadership or technical skills have meaningfully shaped their respective companies, such as Iwata, Miyamoto, Mark Cerny, or whatever, then it would be a different deal. But talking about a Reggie vs Tretton fandom is as silly as talking about a Pepsi vs Coca Cola fandom. It's mostly manufactured, and the few that take it to heart are fools.
EDIT: Also, the Sega bashing from Nintendo AND the Sega bashing TO Nintendo were both hilarious.

I don't recall being born that early lol. Can we go a week without resorting to calling each other fanboys? That's such an easy and mostly misguided argument to make. Terrible for the atmosphere around here too.

Calling names? It's the typical instant response on any sony forum if you mention anything non-sony or you make a comment slightly critical of sony. It's like a witch entered the room. 8-X "Why can't we be friends" plays in the background

I still can't believe what happened after I asked if ps3 owners wanted Halo. I would rather have stepped on a tiger's tail
