TV Enthusiast

so Menashe tells me we are getting close to launching... so now I want to cull some talent from the forums for the TV enthusiast site...

we will be starting relatively slow, but I would like to get some writers whoa re excited about television and have opinions on things like net neutrality, cord cutting, and other issues that make an impact for television

the focus on the site will be more geared towards genre programing in order to fit our demographic (game of thrones, breaking bad, etc..) but I would like to expand outwards with the interests of our staff

I hope to start up a podcast at some point as well as building up some video content

but for now I want to focus primarily on articles/opinion pieces and news

to start out I would like to make a top 10 list that focuses on binge watchable shows on Netflix... with a focus on lesser known series (as in not breaking bad or lost or house of cards)... I thought this subject could be a fun little exercise on the forums where we can discuss and work out an order so whether you want to directly contribute to the site or not, please be involved int he discussion if you have any interest

A good Netflix series that I don't think is too popular is Skins. Also, if you need an ultra game of thrones fan I would love to help! ^_^
do you read the books? because I don't... so a book reader could work well with me in discussion of it for the site, they could also monitor the comments and keep spoilers out

as for skins... I do like skins... well the first 2 seasons anyways

ok... I wrote the framework for the netflix article, and made a feature image for it... so we can start plugging in the entires as we go and then it'll be done... going to work on some other articles and such now

I only use Netflix for my TV watching needs, so I could contribute a little on cutting the cord.

Oh, and The Killing. Which I binged on completely when it hit Netflix.

I bought the domain tventhusiast.com last week and I just changed the nameservers today to point to our servers. As soon as DNS propogation completes over the course of 72 hours, I'll start uploading the theme files and we can start having a basic theme working.

What are you guys planning to include within TV Enthusiast? Film, anime? Steven Seagal re-runs?
not film... and with anime it depends on the progress of anime enthusiast I imagine... I talked to menashe before about using TV Enthusiast to give anime enthusiast a sort of backdoor pilot... as in whoever will run anime enthusiast could do a weekly feature on TV enthusiast called anime enthusiast... and then transition that into its own site

the goal of TV enthusiast will be not on TV as a whole, and not on TV as a device.... but on continuing content.... so for example house of cards is not technically on a TV channel.. but it IS a TV show so it will be covered...but we wont cover EVERYTHING that qualifies as a TV show... my idea is to start out focusing in on the kind of TV that directly relates to our demographic as gamers as well as really high profile TV (mad men for example) and then expand outwards from there base don the interest of our readers and staff

but to start e would be talking about the stuff we talk about on our forums (game of thrones, breaking bad) rather than say honey boo boo

as for the netflix list

here are my picks (this is not the top 10.. just the ones I will bring into our discussion here so that WE can select a top 10, I will include choices from others as well)

Awake
Rectify
Supernatural
the Inbetweeners
An Idiot Abroad

I also think we could include maybe 1 anime... I was thinking attack on titan because it is significant right now and has crossover (with non anime fans) popularity

I would like the top 10 to not just be representative of the 10 best in an order, but rather a nice list that covers a variety of types.... for example... on the choices I submitted... Awake was a high concept series that only lasted 1 season, Rectify is a criminally underwatched character study, supernatural is a fun action/adventure series with a good mix of comedy and drama... the inbetweeners is a fast paced comedy about awkward situations, an idiot abroad is a nature/travel show... with the twist of being hosted by somebody who really doesn't want to do anything adventurous at all... they all kind of fill different niches... it is ok to have a few that fill the same.. but I want to avoid making it a "if you liked breaking bad here are the 10 series most like it on netflix)

skins, and the killing have been suggested.. I think those both fill different niches as well... skins is a teen drama, and the killing is a crime series

this article will also likely be the beginning of TVEs core... our database... I have an idea for that which could make it easier to manage

I wouldn't mind contributing occasionally by talking about stuff I'm already watching, or going on and watching something just to participate in a roundtable or whatever. Can't say I'd commit to much, since I don't really follow TV shows religiously except for a select few, but I'll throw my two cents here and there.

Well, if you need anything Marvel TV related, I'm your man. Loved Agents of Shield, Agent Carter is up soon, as is the Netflix series with Daredevil, Jessica Jones, Luke Cage and Iron Fist.

But really I think I watch too much TV. Finished up Breaking Bad a few weeks ago, going to start Game of Thrones and some others once my exams are done, but also specialist in UK shows, which might provide some contrast (a lot of comedic shows have the same template but vary differently from US to UK; see Inbetweeners.

Some of my favourite shows: Doctor Who, Scrubs, The Thick Of It, Top Gear, New Girl, My Name Is Earl.

Also, this may be only marginally related, but I think it makes some sense for all these enthusiast sites, including gaming enthusiast, to be tied back to these forums. It's only a shame that we're called "Nintendo Enthusiast", because since the beginning we've had very multi-platform multi-media tendencies. At this point we could be called "The Enthusiast Forums" and there would be little difference, I think.

I know I've talked to Menashe before about at least TNE and TGE using these same forums, but there are difficulties with doing that so I don't know where it stands.

one idea I have that I think a bunch of you could be interested in is a long term project where we come up with a few shows that not many people have seen (hopefully that none of us have) and then make it a poll for readers.. and then the one that wins we all watch the first couple episodes and then discuss them.. maybe in a podcast, or a roundtable... similar to what NWR does with retro-active but with TV... it would eb a long porocess with several articles... and we could repeat the process every couple months.. or maybe every year

in addition tot hat.. I had that idea about matt playing an rpg for Nintendo enthusiast and doing an article where the game he plays is picked by a poll and then he has to play the winner and do a follow up article about playing it... I think it would be cool to do something similar with TV... where we have a specific person put up a poll with shows they are embarrassed they haven't tried (for me it would be shield and oz and a few others) and then leave it to the readers to pick the one they try... and then that eprson can make a series of articles as they work their way through the series (maybe only some of it) with the idea of encouraging others to watch along as well and share thoughts with eachother

I would love to do some projects like that

You need a guy for all things Star Wars? Don't even have to ask. Sign me up.

I'm also an avid watcher of other shows, but I'm your guy for anything star wars.

I'll throw in my knowledge relating to Top Gear UK if anyone is interested. I do watch that show religiously, so any questions people might have, let me know, and I'll see what I can do.

finished my rough draft of the summer preview.... gotta go over it a few times and fix it up.... next up, gotta fix up the "what is TV enthusiast" article and then the comic book tv article....

in the meantime... anybody else have some thoughts on the netflix thing?

if you were to recommend a binge watch show on Netflix what would it be? avoid the really common stuff like Breaking Bad and House of Cards... everybody already knows about those and I acknowledge them in the opening paragraph

right now we have

Awake
Rectify
Supernatural
the Inbetweeners
An Idiot Abroad
Attack on Titan
Skins
The Killing

that is 8 shows.... we need 10, and we need to rank them... we can take a ton more suggestions and then narrow down the whole thing so don't be shy

#24
I see Derek up there, nice. That show is also on Netflix but that's perhaps too well known. I don't have a Netflix account so can't really help there.

Skins

Psych
Luther
Alphas
Jericho
Xena
Terriers

An Idiot Abroad
Attack on Titan
Skins
The Killing
Derek
Louie

since we don't have a full staff yet... and since I want to maintain some sort of diversity on the list I am going to have us all vote for the top 5.. then I will pick places 10-6... and the honorable mentions will follow.... though I might not even take the full 5 spaces if the the list is working out to be diverse enough as is...

so I am cutting off at those 18 titles now... and like I did on IGN before with the wii poll... I want you guys to order those 18 titles

make sure to put them in descending order... and if you can only rank some then just do that.... like if you ahve only seen 3 of those shows then rank them like
3.
2.
1.

your first place pick gets more points than the 3rd place pick

if you can rank all 18 please do so...

ties are fine.. they will divide the points of 2 spaces (or 3, or 4)

I think I will start off with 20 points for 1st place to give it an impact... then second place has 17, 3rd has 16.. all the way down to 18th place with 1 point

I'll say voting ends next Thursday/Friday the 29/30 at midnight PST since I know Mario kart comes out then hahaha

as I said I reserve the right to take up the last 5 slots for the sake of diversity int he list.. but I will only take up as many as I need.. the top 3 after the 10 will be honorable mentions

I'll start off
18. Derek (1 point)
17. Alphas (2 points)
16. Xena (3 poitns)
15. Jericho (4 points)
14. the Killing (5 points)
13. Sleeper Cell (6 points)
12. Luther (7 points)
11. the Up Series (8 points)
10. Skins (9 points)
09. An Idiot Abroad (10 points)
08. Louie (11 points)
07. Attack on Titan (12 points)
06. Rectify (13 points)
05. Psych (14 points)
04. Awake (15 points)
03. The Inbetweeners (16 Points)
02. Terriers (17 points)
01. Supernatural (20 points)

everybody vote please.. and it is ok if you can only rank a few

some time later I will do a top 10 TV shows of all time with no limitations like this, and I will experiment with other ways of doing top 10 lists

Alas, I can't rank that many shows, as I haven't watched them. If you can use a top three, I'd go:

1. Attack on Titan
2. The Killing
3. Louie

[Initial D is honestly my number one, but it's a pretty niche anime.]

have any of you seen the up series? it is absolutely fascinating... it started in the 60s I think... it is basically a series of movies that aired on TV... documentaries that follow the lives of a group of children through their lives...

the first one is called 7 up... then 7 plus seven, then 21 up, 28up, 35up, 42 up, 49up, etc..

every 7 years they revisit these people.... but when you binge it you are experiencing somebody growing up before you.. it is kind of surreal

it is interesting because one of the guys his life just goes to hell... I mean he was upper middle class.. and then he is squatting and clearly suffering from some debilitating mental illness... and there is this other guy that was painfully shy and then really kind of comes out as his own person in a great way

I think a lot of people have probably never heard of it.. though I think the simpsons spoofed it a few times

ok so current staff and potential new staff.. does anybody want log-ins to write for the site? I can do that now... I probably will only pick a few initially so as not to give menashe a heart attack so don't be offended. I want staff that is either excited about writing for TV and/or experienced with the other enthusiast sites

I would love to help out with the GOT stuff. I probably shouldn't be on the front line for TV Enthusiast though, since the only show I watch is Game of Thrones and I mean this will only be on itty bitty section of the whole site. But when it comes to GOT I am extremely passionate. I know the lore like the back of my hand, of both the books and the TV show. I can tell apart the differences between the TV show and books with extreme detail, and I can also monitor spoilers extremely well, and can shoot them down as soon as they appear.

I'll have to figure out a role for your you.. maybe a coments mod/contributor.. I'llt alk to menashe about that kind of stuff.. I don't really know much about the backend

as for the up series.. yes it is on netflix.. but you have to look them up individually...

the first is called 7 up, then the next is 7 plus seven.. after that it returns to up and goes every 7 years.. so 21 up, 28 up.. etc...

Sign me up, if it's possible. Like I said before, I don't watch TV religiously, but I do make an effort to keep with some popular shows for the sake of being able to talk about them, and we're all going to watch a specific TV show to talk about it, I'd be all down for that.

I have to talk to menashe about comment moderator positions and such... but the site should be live before the season 4 finale of game of thrones and I would like to do some coverage of that
